Chapter one
Once upon a time, in a land called Gradle, there lived a king. He loved his horse and his wife and his kingdom, but what he loved most was his daughter. When she was born, he named her amira, which meant in his native language, 'the setting sun'. He loved her so much that on her first birthday he gave Amira a small bracelet. Through the bracelet he knew what amira was feeling, no matter where the two were. If she was angry, the sky would turn black over the king's head and it would start to rain. Then he would come home and sort out what ever mess there was. If she was sad and crying, the heavens would open up and it rain would pour down. Then he would come home and comfort the young child. If she was happy, then nothing at all would happen, and the king would stay where ever he was. He was the only one who knew of this power with the exception of the witch who had charmed the bracelet. As the young girl grew older, she became beautiful. She had many friends in the palace, and she tried to be nice to every one... the one person that she just couldn't bring herself to like be her mother's adviser. Her father always said that she had been the one to make the bracelet he had given her 'special', but she didn't believe him. The only time that her father was home to tell her things was when she was upset or angry. Every time something was wrong, he would be home in a flash. No one ever admitted to telling him what she was doing, so she didn't know what to think. The worst part about the palace for the girl was the queen's adviser, who just happened to be her godmother. She always seemed to be leering out of the corner of her eyes at amira, and she didn't like it. Even when she was just a baby princess she would cry when the adviser held her. amira supposed her name was tyra, but no one ever called her that. They just called her the old one. She could see why, the woman's face was creased with age. She often seemed to be giving out jewelry to the higher people of the palace, just simple chains with a stationary bubble of entwined colors in the middle. The people wearing the necklaces always seemed to be ready to listen to the old one, but amira didn't see why. On her second birthday, Amira herself was given a necklace. the old one had insisted on giving her one at an early stage, just so that she would always have a little of her godmother with her. Of course, Amira didn't want part of the old one with her at all times. She was already odd sometimes. But, after much kicking and screaming and apologizing, (the king himself came home) the necklace laid laced around the little girl's neck. The chain was made of pure gold, but no matter how cold the air outside was, even if the princess had taken it off to take a bath, it was as warm as if it had been left out all day in the sun. The gold itself was twisted into, on close inspection, resembled many vines with leaves twined together. The day Amira got it; she only noticed three colors in the bubble in the center: green, pink, and yellow. But, after months of wearing it, she saw purple, blue, orange, and red.
